Game Rules

Recreational 6s:

  • Teams must rotate once clockwise before the new server. You may move positions after the ball has been served. Must return back to your original position before each serve. Being out of position results in a fault and point given to the opposing team.
  • On the serve, your foot cannot touch, go over or under the line before you contact the ball.
  • During serve receive – The serve may not be blocked or attacked. The entirety of the ball must be lower than the top of the net to be returned on the serve.
  • You cannot have any contact with the net (excluding grazes of long hair and loose clothing) during any time the ball is live. You may go under the net, providing there is no interference or contact with the opposing team. No matter how the ball drops, if you go under the net and interfere with the opposing team, the point goes to the team interfered upon.
  • If players from both teams are in the net, it results in a replay.
  • No carries, throws or excessive lifts.
  • Open hand tips are NOT permitted! Must be a “rebound” off open hand.
  • The ball must contact any parts of your body at the same time and rebound off at the same time. Double contacts are not permitted (Ex. arm to chest, chest to arm). The ball can not bobble, be lifted or roll off any body part.
  • Hands must be together when contacting the ball with two hands below the waist.
  • Hands must be together when contacting the ball with two hands above the shoulders; when not attempting a handset or defending a hard driven hit.
  • A block is not considered one of the 3 touches.
  • Blocking the ball across the net
    • If the offensive team attacks the 3rd ball and with certainty is going to clear the net, the defender may have hands across the plane of the net to block the attack. Blocker may not interfere with the ball before the 3rd hit.
    • If the opposing team has a hit(s) left to get the ball over the net, and one of the opposing players is in position to make a play (close proximity and
actively trying to advance the ball), you may not put any body part over the net to attack the ball. If no one is in position to make a play, you may break the plane and attack the ball over the net. (EX. if offensive team has a player under the net, waiting to pull the ball out of the net, you may NOT cross the plane and attack the ball, or if player is going to swing for a hit, the block must be straight up and down, not over net)
  • If the opposing team overpasses and the ball appears to land on net or on your side of the net, it is only considered a block if the opposing team has a player attempting to attack the ball at the same time. If they do not have anyone attacking the ball, and you make contact, that is considered 1 of 3 touches.
  • The ball is not playable if it hits anything outside of the court lines.
  • The wood poles on the net are in play. Any balls that cross over outside of these poles are out of bounds. (Pads, ref stand, rope from net to pole not in play)
  • The ball is playable off the volleyball net.
  • Clean set over the net is permitted. (Can not lift, throw, double hit or carry)

Competitive 4s:

  • Rotating is not required.*
    • *Teams with 3 males and 1 female – Female is to play in a net position (right side/setter/left side) during all rotations except when serving and next serve receive. Must move out of the back row position with the next rotation.
    • When female is in one of 3 net positions, middle back can only attack (jump and hit/block ball downwards onto opposite side) the ball from behind the 10ft line
No matter how the ball drops, if you go under the net and interfere with the opposing team, the point
goes to the team interfered upon.
  • If players from both teams are in the net, it results in a replay.
  • No carries, throws or excessive lifts.
  • Open hand tips are NOT permitted! Must be a “rebound” off open hand or closed hand.
  • The ball must contact any parts of your body at the same time and rebound off at the same time. Double contacts are not permitted (Ex arm to chest, chest to arm).
The ball can not bobble, be lifted or roll off any body part.
  • Hands must be together when contacting the ball with two hands below thewaist.
  • Hands must be together when contacting the ball with two hands above the shoulders when not attempting a handset or defending a hard driven hit.
  • When hand setting, the ball must enter and leave your hands simultaneously.
  • Hand sets may not go over the net for any reason. This eliminates the guesswork of intentional or not. If you hand set, and it bounces off the net and lands on the opposing team’s side, they are awarded the point.
-MBV is making an exception for more leniency for hand setting and lessening therestrictions. The rules are going to allow some similarities to indoor. There is allowed to be rotation of the ball. The rules still stand for double hit, lift, and carry.
-This allowance is for the people who have the basic fundamentals and capabilities for hand setting (indoor and sand) but would like to get more practice or need time to get back into it.
-This is intended to be more strict than recreational but not as strict as B/C levels previously. This will be a trial basis, depending on the sportsmanship and conduct of all our players.
    • If the opposing team has a hit(s) left to get the ball over the net, and an opposing player is in position to make a play (close proximity and actively trying to advance the ball), you may not put any body part over the net to attack the ball. If no one is in position to make a play, you may break the plane and attack the ball over the net. (EX. if offensive team has a player
under the net, waiting to pull the ball out of the net, you may NOT cross the plane and attack the ball, or player is going to swing for a hit, the block must be straight up and down, not over net)
Any balls that cross over outside of these poles are out of bounds.(Pads, ref stand, rope from net to pole not in play)
  • The ball is playable off the volleyball net.
